Idukki formed part of Kerala’s trio of the largest districts distinguished by their area and population. It was ranked as the largest district of Kerala (4, 356 km²) with the 2011 population of 11.09 lakh, that was estimated to slightly slip down to 10.9 lakh in 2021. It’s going to be 12.22 lakh by 2036. Idukki has the lowest density in Kerala, 255/km², and hence majority of its inhabitants are rural (95.31%). The main language of the district is Malayalam, along with Tamil and tribal dialects as well.
